Sam Tighe of Bleacher Report has been waxing lyrical about one Southampton man when writing an article on the club’s official website – Nathan Redmond. The one-cap England international has enjoyed an impressive run of form recently, netting a phenomenal long-range goal against Crystal Palace while also grabbing an assist in that 2-0 win, while also scoring against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in another 2-0 victory – his effort was a strike which killed off the game.
More recently, the former Birmingham forward embarked on a fine dribble before slotting Danny Ings in to score against Tottenham in the FA Cup.
As a result, Tighe has deservedly praised Redmond, while also comparing him to some world-class footballers.
What did he say?
Tighe wrote: “Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso, Gedson Fernandes, James McArthur, Martin Kelly, Vicente Guaita, Leander Dendoncker, Romain Saiss – just some of the people Nathan Redmond has embarrassed, tormented or otherwise conspired to ruin their day since mid-January.
“His ascent to peak powers has seen him dominate on one of the country’s grandest stages, Tottenham’s new stadium, as well as at home on the south coast. There have been times in the last few games that he’s more closely resembled, or hit the heights of, players like Douglas Costa of Juventus or Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund.”
High praise indeed
If it wasn’t already obvious just how well Redmond was playing, Tighe’s praise should solidify that fact.
To be compared to players of Douglas Costa and Jadon Sancho’s ilk – the latter of whom has amassed an eye-catching 15 goals and 15 assists already this term – speaks volumes about just how impressive the Southampton No.22 has been of late.
Credit to Redmond, for he has turned his season around when it looked in danger of being a poor one earlier this term.
We detailed back in the middle of November how he had reverted to type following his contract extension, following a series of ineffective displays, while we also outlined how he let Ralph Hasenhuttl down with a dismal performance against West Ham.
With only four Premier League goal involvements in the current campaign, there is obvious room for improvement, although Tighe’s mentioning of the 25-year-old in the same breath as two Champions League players clearly shows that he has started to do something right.
Calling Premier League experts ONLY: Which year were these top flight clubs formed?
For Hasenhuttl and Southampton’s sake, long may it continue.
