According to BBC Humberside Sport, Leeds are keen on a swoop for Hull’s Jarrod Bowen – a move to Elland Road would be the perfect career choice for the 22-year-old to make and, also, massively strengthen Leeds’ title charge.
What’s the word?
Well, BBC Humberside Sport reported via Twitter that the Whites have added Bowen to their January wish-list and are prepared to submit a multi-million pound offer to acquire his services in the new year.
Marcelo Bielsa is surely desperate to add an attacking midfielder to the ranks ahead of the second half of the season with Samu Saiz set to make the switch to his native Spain next month after agreeing to join Getafe on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
The Peacocks will soon be lacking a quality creative midfielder beyond Pablo Hernandez and so bringing in someone who can pull the strings behind the red-hot Kemar Roofe, while also chipping in with goals himself, is essential if they are to remain in pole position – Bowen is exactly that.
Roofe can’t do it on his own
Former Oxford United man Roofe is currently joint-third top scorer in the Championship with thirteen strikes to his name – his closest competition at Elland Road is Hernandez (7), but the 33-year-old showed signs of fatigue against Blackburn and cannot be relied upon indefinitely. Especially with Saiz heading out the door, goals from midfield need to be added and quick.
Bowen has been in fantastic form for the Tigers this season as he chalks up eight goals and three assists and, at 22, the attacking midfielder has plenty of room for development. The Englishman’s stats make for pleasant reading, but the appeal with this one is that Bielsa has a reputation for being excellent at nurturing young talent.
The Spaniard has overseen the growth of 19-year-old Jack Clarke, who scored his first goal for the club against Aston Villa recently; transformed midfielder Jamie Shackleton into a quality right-back amidst a defensive injury crisis; and developed a previously scapegoated Kalvin Phillips into a solid partner for Pontus Jansson in the absence of an orthodox centre-back.
There are many parallels between Clarke, in particular, and Bowen – both are pacey, promising and goal-scoring midfielders but Bowen is able to more consistently produce the one thing Clarke may be criticised for a lack of: an end product.
Capable of playing on either wing as well as behind the striker, the Leominster born baller could be a shrewd signing if they can get him for the price they want – The Daily Mail believes the West Yorkshire outfit will look to sign him for less than £6.5m.
