As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is a January transfer target for La Liga giants Barcelona, as a back-up in their pursuit of Philippe Coutinho.
What’s the story?
Given his blistering form for the Gunners in the recent North London Derby, Arsenal fans might not be too pleased to hear that Ozil is continuing to attract admirers as he approaches the end of his contract at the Emirates.
Mundo Deportivo report that Barcelona see him as an option in January if their continued pursuit of Philippe Coutinho fails.
The outlet says a number of factors make him a prime choice for the club, including the potential of a cheaper fee due to his contract situation and the fact he can be registered for their UEFA Champions League squad due to only competing in the Europa League with Arsenal.
The 29-year-old showed he can still be an effective talent for the Gunners this weekend, but can they stop him from making a big move back to Spain?
Good enough for Barcelona?
Some might scoff at the suggestion Ozil still has what it takes to play for a club with the ambition Barcelona have, but the fact is he’s still one of the most creative attacking midfielders in the world and knows all about performing to a high standard in La Liga.
Before his move to the Emirates he was excellent for Real Madrid, creating a massive 81 assists and scoring 27 goals in 159 appearances. That’s actually a better record than his feats at Arsenal, where he is the leading assist creator since joining in 2013.
Arsenal of course should be doing all they can to keep him, but with massive clubs reportedly knocking on his door, he can be forgiven for being tempted with a move away.
