Cerro Porteno and Union Espanola both qualified for the second round of the Copa Libertadores with aggregate wins on Thursday.
Cerro Porteno, from the Paraguayan Primera Division, entered their second leg clash against Deportivo Petare in Caracas with a one-goal advantage, thanks to Roberto Nanni’s first leg strike.
But they knew that heading to Venezuela, they would face a pumped-up Deportivo side and the second leg hosts took the lead and equalised on aggregate when Victor Guaza opened the scoring after 14 minutes to delight the Estadio Olimpico de la UCV crowd.
But Deportivo Petare’s joy was short-lived, with their destroyer in the first leg, Nanni, finding the net again after 36 minutes.
The goal was Nanni’s sixth in his last eight matches in all competitions and despite the hosts best efforts in the second half, they could not draw level, giving Cerro Porteno a 2-1 aggregate win.
Union Espanola also won through to the second round, after a 0-0 second-leg draw at the Estadio Santa Laura-Universidad SEK.
The Chilean side won the first leg thanks to a Fernando Cordero strike after 16 minutes and held out Bolivar in the second to progress to the next stage.
