According to The Times, Spurs believe they have made a breakthrough in their efforts to bring Gareth Bale back to Tottenham Hotspur.
What’s the word?
Gareth Bale’s future at Real Madrid has been up in the air for a while with a move to China last summer failing to materialise after initial reports suggested he could leave.
However, since then, he’s seemed more focused on playing golf than he has football, and his turbulent spell in La Liga looks as though it may finally come to an end on transfer deadline day.
The Times understands there is growing confidence from the Tottenham board, including Daniel Levy, that they can bring the Welshman back to north London today.
Bale moved for a world-record £85m at the time to Real but according to Transfermarkt, he’s now rated at just £36m – likely due to his injury problems and the fact his contract will have just two years left to run in the summer.
A sensational return
This has the potential to be one of the stories of deadline day with Tottenham in the market to bring back a player who shone for them in the past.

Bale was nothing short of sensational in his time with Spurs previously, winning the PFA Player of the Year and going onto score 56 goals in just over 200 games while also claiming a total of 58 assists.
The forward may only have netted three times in 2019/20 but this is a player of fine calibre, and if a deal is concluded before the deadline passes, it would be a huge statement of intent from Levy and Spurs.
The north London outfit have been on the hunt for a forward this month with both Willian Jose and Olivier Giroud linked but this could be a shrewd alternative of finding more goals in their squad.
