LEWIS BAKER
There are already rumours that Leeds United are plotting a move for Chelsea youngster Lewis Baker, who captained the England U20s to a 6-0 romping over Romania last Friday:
The midfielder is held in high regard at Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho already tipping him as a future England international.
2013/14 was a huge year for the Junior Lion; he made his first appearance for Chelsea at senior level in the FA Cup and also netted in the U21 Premier League final against Manchester United, leading him to earn the Young Player of the Year award in west London.
He’s been compared to Frank Lampard in style, boasting an industrious work-rate, an eye for space and a clinical streak in front of goal, having netted 9 times in just 14 appearances for England at U19 level. He also bagged this incredible strike against Arsenal last season:

The 19 year-old is more than ready to test the waters at Championship level, but Fansite Weaintgotnohistory claim he’s in Jose Mourinho’s first team plans for the current campaign.
CHRIS WOOD
With Matt Smith leaving for Fulham on deadline day, Leeds need to find a replacement striker who can parallel the summer departee’s battering ram approach in the final third.
One potential Premier League front-man solution that’s attracting a lot of Championship attention, particularly from Wolves, is Leicester City youngster Chris Wood:
The 22 year-old has netted 36 times in his last 107 Championship appearances, and measuring in at 6 foot 3, uses his height and strength well to bring others into the game.
Here’s a look at the former West Brom youngster in action:

And although the New Zealand forward looks like a real prospect, even finding a top flight goal against Everton last month:
…it’s no secret that the Foxes were looking to offload him this summer. Wood is more than capable of firing Leeds up the Championship table but Wolves will provide hot competition for his signature.
DIEGO POYET
Diego Poyet only joined West Ham this summer in a compensation agreement after impressing at Charlton Athletic, but there are already rumours that he could return to the second-tier on loan:
Indeed, despite only making his Championship debut in February after marauding his way through the academy ranks, the son of Sunderland boss Gus claimed the Player of the Year award at the Valley.
The 19 year-old midfielder combines the long-range passing of Blackburn great Tugay with the defensive tenacity of Scott Parker – he finished last season with the highest tackling return of any Championship player, as detailed below:
Poyet is a real prospect but the Hammers have added well this summer and it’s unlikely there will be a regular spot for him in the first team. A loan move to the Football League seems likely, but as previously stated, Brentford and Charlton already appear to be in talks.
JEROME THOMAS
Leeds United lack a genuine wide-man – the kind of player who, through pace and trickery alone, can drive the team 40 or 50 yards up the pitch with the occasional mazy run.
This is best illustrated by the fact no Whites players to have made more than one appearance this season have produced a better return than just 0.8 successful dribbles per match:
The loan signing of Brazilian prodigy Adryan will remedy that somewhat but the Elland Road outfit still lack natural width. One potential solution comes in the form of Crystal Palace winger Jerome Thomas, who was spotted leaving Selhurst Park early on deadline day but failed to secure a move away.
The 31 year-old was in decent form as the Eagles staved off relegation from the Premier League last term, as shown through his per-90-min metric statistics:
And his quality is well proven, throughout spells in both the top flight and the second tier with Arsenal, Charlton, Portsmouth and West Brom. He also enjoyed a brief loan spell at Elland Road during the 2012/13 campaign, providing this assist to Luciano Becchio against Chelsea:
With Neil Warnock bringing back Eagles prodigy Wilfried Zaha this summer, Thomas’ game-time will likely be slashed. His contract also expires and the end of the season, so the South London side will be keen to put him in the shop window until January, where they could force a permanent sale.
SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS
Another winger option for the Yorkshire outfit to consider is QPR outcast Shaun Wright-Phillips, who was widely expected to leave the Premier League side this summer after Harry Redknapp had made his feelings perfectly clear in January:
The 32 year-old was once a leading performer in the top flight, netting 27 times in 178 Premiership appearances for Manchester City and winning the English title with Chelsea in 2006.
In fact, Wright-Phillips claimed six goals and 36 caps for England during the peak of his career. Here’s a look at the former Citizens youngster in action:

But the winger’s career has seriously tanked over the last few years – last season, he made just 14 appearances for QPR in the Championship, and he’s only ever found the net once for his current club in 63 league outings.
Short on fitness and confidence however, a move to another club could instigate a late revival in the former England man. Rangers are determined to get him off the wage bill too, or at least a significant percentage of his salary, so a loan deal would be in the best interests of all parties.
Matthew Lowton
Matthew Lowton will be forever famed for this sensational goal which went on to trigger Aston Villa’s dramatic great escape at the end of the 2012/13 campaign:
But the 25 year-old’s Villa career has since taken a downward turn, in no small part due to a reported spat with Paul Lambert after turning up late for training in January this year.
The Villains boss claims the fall-out has been overhyped and Lowton remains in his plans. But the versatile defender made just 15 appearances last term, under half the amount from the year before, and is yet to feature in the Premier League this season.
He was widely expected to move to the Championship this summer, having been linked with Middlesbrough. But no deal materialised, making an emergency loan all the more likely.
A real jack of all trades, who has featured at right-back, centre-back and right midfield for Aston Villa, Lowton would add top tier quality, flexibility and depth to the Elland Road roster. Here’s a look at some of his highlights for the Birmingham outfit:
