According to The Sun, Spurs are keen on a move for Norwich’s Max Aarons as the youngster impresses in defence for the Canaries – if he completes a switch to White Hart Lane, it would surely be the end for Kieran Trippier’s time in North London.
What’s the word?
Well, The Sun has reported that Mauricio Pochettino and co. are eyeing a move for the 18-year-old but will have to compete with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for his signature – Poch will be hoping that the right-back can resist the temptation to follow in the footsteps of countrymen Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson by crossing the channel.
The report states that the Lilywhites are willing to part with £15m in order to acquire his services but, after receiving £33m for the sales of James Maddison and Josh Murphy in the summer, the East Anglian outfit are under no pressure to let the Englishman leave.
Like Aarons, Spurs’ own young full-back Kyle Walker-Peters has been a revelation this season and was man of the match in a 5-0 Boxing Day battering of Bournemouth in which he astonishingly chalked up three assists. While the signing of another promising right-back would be unwelcome news to 21-year-old Walker-Peters, it is surely even more damning for Kieran Trippier.
Trippier’s time up?
Former Burnley man Trippier might have become a cult hero over the summer for his England exploits but, while a groin injury sustained in November ensured he spent just under a month on the sidelines, he has not carried his World Cup form into the Premier League.
The 28-year-old is surely one of the best wing-backs in the league but, as Poch opts for a back four more often than not, his defensive frailties are often apparent and exploitable if he is deployed at right-back – this has led to the free-kick merchant losing his starting spot to Serge Aurier, who has come on leaps and bounds this campaign.
With the emergence of Walker-Peters and Aurier’s steady improvement, liability Trippier could see his game-time slashed indefinitely should a deal for Aarons go through.
